UN report: Opium production in Afghanistan has dropped by 95% – 2024-04-30 21:39:52

/ world today news/ On November 5, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime published a report saying that since the Afghan Taliban banned opium cultivation in April last year, the area under cultivation has decreased from 233,000 hectares last year to 10 800 this year. At the same time, opium production fell by 95% to 333 tons.

Ghada Wali, executive director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, said that “in the coming months, Afghanistan urgently needs to increase investment in sustainable livelihoods so that locals do not have to grow opium.”

According to Valli, from a long-term perspective, this year’s reduction in the area of opium cultivation offers a “real chance” to fight against illegal markets and reduce drug harm in the country and around the world.
