Iran’s “repression of peaceful protests” and “institutional discrimination against women and girls” have led to a dire situation of human rights violations, according to a recent United Nations report. The report states that these violations, some of which amount to “crimes against humanity,” have resulted in extrajudicial killings, disproportionate use of force, torture, rape, enforced disappearances, and gender persecution.
The report, which references a comprehensive investigation by the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission, draws attention to the protests that ensued following the tragic death of 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini in September 2022. Amini’s death, while under custody for alleged violations of Iran’s mandatory hijab law, became a catalyst for widespread demonstrations across Iran.
