Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
A security officer at the United Nations representative office (PBB) in Guzara District, Herat Province died, when the building was the target of an attack in the midst of fighting between militia groups Taliban and teams Afghanistan.
Reported Associated Press, until now it is not known who is responsible for the shot at the UN representative office.
The UN Special Envoy for Afghanistan, Deborah Lyons, called the attack a despicable act. So far he has asked for an explanation from both sides regarding the shots fired at the UN office.
“The perpetrators of this attack must be identified and held accountable for their actions. The United Nations continues to seek the full picture of the attack and is seeking an explanation from the warring parties,” said Deborah.
The Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, said the UN office was in the midst of a firefight between them and Afghan forces, but he made sure it was safe and there was nothing to worry about.
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and US State Department spokeswoman Jalina Porter condemned the deadly attack on the UN office.
“Attacks against civilians as well as members of the United Nations and its facilities are prohibited under international law. We again urge that the violence in Afghanistan be stopped, and countries in the region call on the warring parties to immediately negotiate,” the joint statement said.
In the past year the Taliban have slowly seized control of nearly half of Afghanistan. However, since the US coalition forces and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) were gradually repatriated, the Taliban have increasingly seized territory and attacked Afghan security forces.
The Taliban even currently control a number of border areas of Afghanistan. In Herat Province, the Taliban succeeded in occupying the Islamic border post of Qala which became a crossing point to and from Iran.
