Many Palestinians in Gaza who have followed the Israeli army’s evacuation orders and sought safety in designated areas are finding that there is very little space left in those densely populated enclaves. Gemma Connell said this on Monday. Connell is the leader of a United Nations humanitarian team in the Gaza Strip.
Connell, who has been in Gaza for several weeks, describes what she sees there as a ‘human chessboard’, on which thousands of Palestinians, who have already left somewhere many times, now have to flee again without any guarantee that they will find somewhere else. destination will be safe.
Connell, who visited the Deir al-Balah neighborhood in central Gaza on Monday, said: “People moved south with mattresses and all their belongings, in vans, trucks and cars, to try to find a safe place. I’ve talked to a lot of people. There is so little space left here in Rafah that people just don’t know where to go. People flee from one area to another. But they are not safe there.’
Earlier on Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he will step up the fight against the Palestinian movement Hamas. “It will be a long war that is not about to end,” he assured. (AP)
