It has been impossible to deliver aid by road to the northernmost region of Tigray for the past three months, particularly due to the ongoing fighting along the road in the neighboring region of Afar, said he added.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), many aid activities remain reduced or suspended in Tigray. Fewer than 7,000 people received food aid last week, a tiny fraction of the 870,000 people the United Nations and its partners try to help each week. Humanitarian partners have also warned that less than 10% of the required amount of improved seeds has been brought to Tigray before the start of the planting season, which starts in just one month.

However, medical and nutritional supplies continue to be airlifted to Mekelle, the capital of Tigray, 18 tons over the past week. Separately, more than 100,000 head of cattle have been vaccinated over the past week with supplies brought in by recent flights, but “this is far less than we can transport by road, and fuel shortages still make it difficult to distribute supplies“, OCHA added.
