UN Human Rights Warns Israel of Possible War Crime for Forced Transfers

United Nations. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, warned Israel on Thursday that the “forced transfer” of a large part of the population of northern Gaza, subject to bombings and attacks by the Israeli military forces, would constitute a ” war crime”.

“There is great concern about a large-scale forcible transfer of civilians that does not meet international wartime requirements for evacuation for imperative military reasons,” the high commissioner told reporters in New York.

“The forcible transfer of a large part of the population of northern Gaza would constitute a war crime,” he said, before making “a call on Israel to immediately facilitate the massive arrival of unitary aid that is needed in all parts of Loop”.

This week there was information that Israeli forces are preventing humanitarian aid from accessing the north, exacerbating already desperate humanitarian and medical needs, he warned.

For a week, Israeli forces have been carrying out bombings and ground operations in northern Gaza and in the Jabaliya area, where they claim that the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas is trying to regroup its forces.

An Israeli bombing killed at least 14 people sheltering in a local school on Thursday, local hospitals said.

Israel announced this Thursday the death of the head of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, to whom it attributed the organization of the attacks on October 7, 2023 on Israeli soil in which Islamist militiamen killed 1,206 people, most of them civilians, and which triggered the current war.

Türk regretted the “very complex relationship” that his office maintains with the Israeli authorities, to whom in the last two years he has written several times to “document what happened on October 7.”

“Unfortunately, I never got an answer,” he said, while demanding the “immediate and unconditional release” of hostages captured during the attack, who a year later remain in the hands of Palestinian armed groups.
