UN HR chief ‘horrified’ by Israeli bombing near Lebanon hospital

Ginebra. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, said Tuesday he was “horrified” by Monday’s Israeli bombing near a hospital south of Beirut.

“I am horrified by the Israeli airstrike near the Rafic Hariri hospital in the densely populated Jnah neighborhood of Beirut, which reportedly left at least 18 dead, including four children, and 60 injured,” Türk said in a press release.

“The fundamental principles of international humanitarian law on the protection of civilians must be respected,” he added.

Rescuers were still searching Tuesday for possible survivors of the bombing, which could have caused a higher number of victims.

The hospital only suffered minor damage, “to the solar panels and glass facades,” said its director.

But nearby, four buildings were destroyed by the attack, an AFP correspondent noted.

“Hospitals, ambulances and medical personnel are specifically protected by international humanitarian law,” Türk stressed.

“I reiterate the UN’s call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and remind all parties that the protection of civilians must be a top priority,” he added.
