UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has described the 1,193 people killed this year in violence by armed groups as “beyond tolerance”. It illustrates the reality of Haiti, torn by insurgency.

The need to deploy security forces for an urgent mission to secure the Caribbean nation has been renewed. The reality is that in the current situation, there is no realistic alternative mechanism to protect human life. Turk’s statement came as the United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting to discuss the crisis in the western part of Hispaniola Island.
The meeting in New York expressed deep concern over the “critical” situation in Haiti, threatened by a bloody civil war waged by criminal gangs who control much of the country unless Prime Minister Ariel Henry resigns.
The head of the current government, which has been in power since the assassination of President Jovanel Moises in 2021, was due to resign in February, but he struck a power-sharing deal with the opposition until new elections are held. Official sources in Puerto Rico confirmed yesterday that Henry is currently in Jamaica, according to local media, but arrived in San Juan after a trip to Kenya, unable to return home due to last week’s spate of violence.
According to the United Nations, 15,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in Port-au-Prince due to the latest clashes, looting and attacks.
