Nine unarmed Swiss soldiers can be sent to the UN headquarters in New York to promote peace. At the request of the organization, the Federal Council decided on Wednesday to increase its support.
The UN, whose missions are growing in complexity, is increasingly dependent on the military know-how of its Member States. For Switzerland, this commitment represents an excellent opportunity to participate in UN activities and contribute to peacekeeping.
Currently, three Swiss soldiers are on site: two officers for humanitarian demining and an expert for the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of former combatants.
