The General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) approved this Tuesday a draft resolution that demands an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
With 153 votes in favor, 10 against and 23 abstentions, the document was approved in an extraordinary emergency session, and was proposed by Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait , Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Mauritania, Oman, Qatar, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, Yemen and the State of Palestine.
The text expresses “serious concern about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and the suffering of the Palestinian civilian population”, and highlights the need to protect the civilian population.

In addition to calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the resolution demands that all parties comply with their obligations under international law, including humanitarian law.
Likewise, the text calls for the hostages to be released immediately and announces the decision to temporarily suspend the tenth regular period of emergency sessions and authorizes the presidency of the General Assembly to resume it, once the Member States request it.
Nations that voted against the resolution include Israel, the United States, Austria and the Czech Republic, among others; while Argentina was one of those that abstained.
