Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The 193-member United Nations (UN) General Assembly has announced that it will hold a special session on Gaza, Palestine, again. This will be the world’s new weapon against Israel’s attacks on the enclave.

“The President of the UN General Assembly, Dennis Francis, has just informed member countries,” the press service of the President of the General Assembly, Dennis Francis, was quoted as saying New Arab, Monday (11/12/2023).

“That he will hold the 45th plenary meeting of the tenth Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly on Tuesday, December 12 2023,” he emphasized.

Previously, Egypt and Mauritania had officially requested a meeting using UN General Assembly Resolution 377. The letter emphasized the need for another meeting after members of the UN Security Council (DK) vetoed the ceasefire resolution.

Resolution 377 allows UN bodies to take action if there are indications that the UNSC is failing to carry out its primary responsibility to maintain international peace and security. The resolution was first adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1950.

Previously, the United States (US) vetoed the UN Security Council’s request to immediately implement a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. Washington said its reason for vetoing the resolution was that a ceasefire would not be effective.

“A cease-fire will only seed the next war as Hamas has no desire to see lasting peace,” according to US Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood.

The vote on the DK itself arose from an initiative by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres last week. He used rarely used powers to warn the DK of an impending “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza.

Guterres used Article 99 of the UN Charter, which was last used more than half a century ago. It states that the secretary general may inform the council of matters that he considers threaten international peace and security.

This represents an important additional power for the secretary general. Because real power in the UN is ultimately held by its 193 member countries, especially the 15 countries that serve in the DK forum.
