The head of the UN food program in Yemen was killed in an attack on Friday afternoon, according to local police.
The attack took place in the southwestern province of Taiz. An unknown gunman on a motorcycle shot and killed Jordanian Mouayad Hameedi while he was having lunch at a restaurant in the city of Turbah, said a police source who did not want to be named.
The attackers ran away while Hameedi was taken to hospital, according to the source.
Yemen’s Minister of Health Qasem Buhaibeh has expressed his condolences on Twitter and asks the security forces to arrest the criminals behind the murder.
The UN refers to the nine-year armed conflict in the country as a humanitarian disaster which has led to the poor population being at risk of famine.
