UN Envoy Visits Afghanistan, Meets Taliban Leaders

NEW YORK – Deputy of General secretaty PBB for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths reportedly traveled to Afghanistan for talks with leaders Taliban . Griffiths came to Kabul at the behest of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to discuss the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.

“At Guterres’ request, Martin Griffiths is currently in Kabul. During his visit Griffiths met with Mullah Baradar and the Taliban leadership in Kabul to engage with the humanitarian authorities,” Guterres spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.

During this meeting, explained Dujarric, Griffiths reaffirmed the commitment of the humanitarian community to provide impartial and independent humanitarian aid and protection to millions of people in need.

“He called for all civilians – especially women and girls and minorities – to be protected at all times. He expressed his solidarity with the Afghan people,” Dujarric continued, as reported by Xinhua on Monday (6/9/2021).

Dujarric said, during the meeting, the Taliban promised that the safety and security of humanitarian staff, and humanitarian access to people in need, would be guaranteed and humanitarian workers – both men and women – would be guaranteed freedom of movement.

“Griffiths will also meet and express his gratitude on behalf of the United Nations to representatives of humanitarian organizations, both UN agencies and non-governmental organizations, who continue to operate in the country and have helped eight million people this year,” he said.
