UN envoy to Iran to discuss Yemen crisis – Xinhua English.news.cn

TEHRAN, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) – Senior Assistant to Iran’s Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs Ali-Asghar Khaji and United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths spoke on Sunday in Tehran, the Iranian capital, reported the official IRNA news agency.

At the meeting, they discussed the crisis in Yemen. Mr. Khaji spoke of the difficult situation caused in this country by the war and the economic pressure imposed, and called on the UN as well as the international community to intervene to stop the war and remove the pressure on the people, while stressing the Iran’s willingness to provide humanitarian and medical aid to Yemen for its fight against the novel coronavirus.

He also called for settling the situation in Yemen through political means, holding talks among Yemenis and forming an inclusive government with the help of all political parties.

Martin Griffiths, for his part, highlighted Iran’s role in helping to establish peace in the region, cease fire, remove economic pressure and resume political talks.

During his stay, the UN official will participate in discussions and exchange ideas with Iranian officials on ways to end the crisis.
