Mexico City. The Office in Mexico of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN-DH) welcomed the approval of the constitutional reforms on housing, in the Chamber of Deputies, and on substantive equality, in the Senate.
Regarding the modification to article 123 of the Constitution, approved by the deputies, he encouraged that secondary laws incorporate human rights standards and guarantee adequate housing for people in the informal sector and migrants.
“The housing system for working people and business contributions to the National Housing Fund are advances towards the realization of this human right, in line with the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR) and the recommendations of the ESCR Committee” , he stated on social networks. Regarding the reform that modifies constitutional articles 4, 21, 41, 73, 116, 122 and 123, approved by the senators, the UN-DH asserted that it strengthens the protection of substantive equality and promotes the full participation of women in equality in public life, “guaranteeing gender parity at all levels of government.”
Likewise, she highlighted the measures to promote women’s rights to a life free of violence and reinforce investigations with a gender perspective, in order to achieve justice and eradicate the systematic patterns that perpetuate attacks against them.
It also recognized the importance of making visible the contribution of women in the workplace, under the principle of “equal remuneration for work of equal value,” and encouraged the creation of mechanisms that allow closing the wage gap and guaranteeing labor equity.
