FAJAR.CO.ID, NEW YORK — The United Nations (UN) agreed to demand an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, on Tuesday (12/12).
It is known, after around 153 members of the UN General Assembly agreed to support the ceasefire step.
United States President Joe Biden has warned Israel that it is losing international support due to its ‘indiscriminate’ bombing of civilians in its war against Hamas militants.
After condemnation from UN officials regarding the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the 193-member UN General Assembly passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire with 153 countries voting in favor and 23 not voting.
The United States and Israel, which argue that the ceasefire only benefits Hamas, opposed the move along with eight other countries.
This resolution is non-binding but has political weight, reflecting global views on the war.
The United States vetoed a similar call at the 15-member Security Council last week.
The Palestinian Authority welcomed the resolution and urged other countries to pressure Israel to adopt a ceasefire.
A Hamas official in exile, Izzat El-Reshiq, in a statement on Telegram echoed the reaction, saying Israel must ‘stop aggression, genocide and ethnic cleansing against our people’.
Before the resolution was passed, Biden said Israel had received support from “some world officials” including the United States and the European Union.
