UN delegation visited Afghanistan; Taliban criticized for its policies against women

United Nations strongly criticizes Taliban’s treatment of women. The UN position was clarified after the visit of UN members to Afghanistan.

The Taliban seized power in Afghanistan again in August 2021. After that, great restrictions were introduced for women. Recently, the Taliban banned women from secondary education, higher education, public sector jobs, and visiting parks.

“The Taliban have denied even basic rights to women and girls,” Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the UN secretary-general, told reporters. He said that despite doing so much, it is not justifiable to say that he has done a couple of good things for them.

The UN delegation arrived in Afghanistan on Monday. They also met Taliban officials during their four-day visit to Kabul and Kandahar.

“We accept that Tabilan has made some important concessions to women. But the restrictions they impose will confine Afghan women and girls to their own homes. “Such restrictions, which violate all rights, destroy a future for them,” UN Deputy Secretary-General Mohammed said in a statement.

On December 24, the Taliban issued an order banning women workers. Later, women were banned from universities. The Taliban had previously banned high school education for girls. It was also ordered that women should only wear a full-body veil in public places.

After this, the countries of the world, including the United States, came out against the anti-women policies of the Taliban. The United States had approached the United Nations to intervene to remove such inhumane restrictions on women.

But the Taliban’s response was that the country operates on certain religious beliefs and should not interfere with it and polarize it.

But the eleven-member committee of the Raksha Samiti came out against the anti-women policy of the Taliban. A committee consisting of members of the United States, Britain, and France issued a joint statement demanding that the Taliban withdraw the prohibitions against women.

But the Taliban government does not back down from its position. Government sources indicate that they are not ready to roll back the policies imposed on women.

There were also reports that the Taliban government ordered male doctors not to treat women in Afghanistan. The Taliban also said in the order that they will conduct inspections in all hospitals to ensure that the order is being implemented.
