UN Day event looks at growth prospects

With the theme “Prospects for Growth”, a public event on the occasion of United Nations Day on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, from 6 p.m., invites you to the New Town Hall, Rathausplatz 1, Goldene Pforte entrance. The evening of lectures and discussions is organized by the Institute for Integrated Material Flow and Resource Management at the United Nations University Dresden (UNU-FLORES), the Technical University of Dresden and the state capital Dresden. The organizers will shed light on various questions, such as: Can growth be measured using means that go beyond classic economic evaluation? How can sustainability aspects be better incorporated? And what is specifically possible at the local level to bring together decent work and economic growth? Traditionally, the Local Agenda Dresden prizes are awarded as part of UN Day and, now in their 25th year, local activities for sustainable business are publicly recognized. What process is planned?

After the opening by Jan Pratzka, representative for economics, digital affairs, human resources and security for the state capital Dresden, Professor Dr. Edeltraud Günther, Director of UNU-FLORES, on the United Nations Summit of the Future. With a video message, Professor Dr. Dr. Ulrike Malmendier from the Economic Advisory Council welcomed the guests. Afterwards there will be an open panel discussion with Prof. Dr. Christian Leßmann, Professor of Economics at the Technical University of Dresden, Nina Treu, co-founder of the New Economy Concept Work, and Johannes Zieseniß, scientific advisor for Mission Wertvoll, will take part. The Local Agenda Award 2024 will follow later. For the 25th time, the Local Agenda 21 for Dresden e. V. exemplary projects and commitments for sustainable development in Dresden with the “Local Agenda Prize”.

The duo Azind from Leipzig will provide the musical framework for the UN Day event in Dresden City Hall. The artist Georg Weyerer will also be presenting his installation called “Semper altius semper pulchrius semper plus”, which means something like “Always higher, always more beautiful, always more”. What tradition does UN Day have in Dresden?

79 years ago, on October 24, 1945, the Charter of the United Nations (UN) came into force. UN sites around the world are celebrating this event and the decades of commitment to world peace and more sustainable development that followed. Dresden is also a UN location, as scientists from all over the world have been working here since 2012 at the Institute for Integrated Material Flow and Resource Management at the United Nations University (UNU-FLORES) in the World Trade Center.

In addition to UNU-FLORES, the organizers of the annual United Nations Day in Dresden include the Technical University of Dresden and its Center for International Studies, the state capital Dresden, the Local Agenda 21 for Dresden e. V., the UNICEF Dresden working group, the United Nations Association of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt & Thuringia and the Lions Club Dresden Agenda 21 e. v.
