UN: Condemnation of Houthi rebels’ invasion of UN offices in Yemen – 2024-08-14 23:18:49

The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turktoday strongly condemned the invasion of the representation of his Office in Sana’a by Houthi rebels.

In a statement, Mr. Turk says that entering a UN office without permission and seizing documents and property by force is completely incompatible with the privileges and immunities of the United Nations.

It is noted that these are important documents as they relate to the UN’s human rights work. It is the evidence for the work carried out by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights based in Yemen.

Mr. Turk called on the Ansar Allah movement (more widely known as the Houthis, after the surname of its leaders) to leave the premises and immediately return all seized assets and documents.

He also repeated his appeal for the immediate and unconditional release of all UN collaborators and staff held in Yemen.

“We recall that in the wake of the detention of UN staff members in June and due to the security situation, the head of Human Rights decided to temporarily suspend the operations of the Office in Sanaa and other areas under the control of the Ansar Allah movement. The Office continues to operate in other areas of Yemen” said Deputy Spokesman of the Secretary General, Farhan Haq during the Press Briefing.
