(ANSA) – BOGOTÁ, OCTOBER 18 – According to the latest report from the Integrated System for Monitoring Illicit Crops (Simci) of the United Nations Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (UNODC), Colombia has beaten every record pure cocaine production, rising from 1,738 tonnes in 2022 to 2,664 tonnes in 2023, which equates to a 53% increase in the last 12 months. The land cultivated with coca instead increased by 10%, going from 230,000 hectares to 253,000 hectares. The Simci 2023 report indicates that Peru instead recorded a slight reduction in the area cultivated with coca in 2023, Bolivia completed a three-year period of stability while Colombia had a generalized growth in production in the last 12 months in 16 of the 19 departments where this type of drug is produced. The boom in the departments of Cauca and Nariño, which borders Ecuador, stands out above all, while 40% of the areas of greatest expansion in cocaine production in the last 12 months are concentrated in the Pacific region.
