UN Climate Conference kicks off in Glasgow / Article

It started yesterday and will last for almost two weeks. This summit has been called humanity’s last chance to save itself from a climate catastrophe.

Experts warn that only effective action will help prevent the more devastating effects of climate change on humanity.

The 2015 Paris Climate Conference called for limiting global warming to well below two degrees Celsius from pre-industrial revolutions and, if possible, to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Aloks Sharma, President of the UN Climate Conference, said: “The rapidly changing climate is sounding the alarm for the world to adapt more quickly, to recognize the damage done and to take immediate action to keep the 1.5-degree goal alive. We know that this conference is our last best hope. “We have unprecedented discussions and negotiations ahead of us, but I believe that this international system can deliver. It must deliver.”

A large number of climate activists arrived in Scotland’s largest city over the weekend to urge politicians to take urgent action to halt climate change, including Swedish climate activist Greta Tunberg in Glasgow.
