The HIM has launched a new appeal to public and private donors to finance with 2,822 million dollars (about 2,600 million euros) the most urgent actions to save civilian lives in Gazawhere the war with Israel is in its seventh month, and in West Bankwhich suffers a wave of violence from Israeli forces and settlers.
The objective is to address the most vital needs of 3.3 million Palestinians over the next nine months: 2.3 million in the Gaza Strip, that is, the entire population; and 800,000 people in the West Bank, more than a third of the population of this occupied territory.
“This urgent appeal sets out an estimate of the resources needed to reduce human suffering and prevent further loss of life in Gaza and the West Bank, and is based on the best information available at this time”explained the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid (OCHA).
The actions contemplated are those considered most likely to be implemented between now and the beginning of next year and are based on the understanding that “many of the current security problems and access limitations” will most likely continue.
Among the humanitarian organizations that this request seeks to finance are various UN entities that work in food assistance, child protection, human rights, among other areas; NGOs that operate at the local level, as well as the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), the target of constant attacks by the Israeli Government, which has threatened to no longer allow it to work in Gaza.
Among other things, Israel has accused UNRWA of having among its employees members of the Islamist group Hamas, responsible for the attacks on October 7, an accusation that was not supported by evidence, which is why several countries that initially suspended their contributions to This organization has reestablished them, although not all of them.
This agency has more than 13,000 workers and is the largest channel of humanitarian response in Gaza, where due to the war situation it serves the entire population.
Last November, a month after the Hamas attacks and the outbreak of war, the UN launched a first request for funds for 1.2 billion dollars (about 1.13 billion euros) for the Palestinian territories, which has been fully covered.
The war in Gaza has caused more than 33,000 deaths, of which 10,000 have been women and 14,000 children, in addition to more than 76,000 wounded, and 19,000 orphans. EFE (I)
