This is the result of an analysis by the UN Human Rights Office, which analyzed data from thousands of deaths in the current Gaza war. Most of them had died in attacks on residential buildings.
The UN attributes the high number of civilian deaths to Israel’s use of weapons with large-scale effects in densely populated areas. However, stray bullets from armed Palestinian groups play a much smaller role. UN Human Rights Commissioner Türk complained that fundamental principles of international humanitarian law were not being adhered to. Israel’s diplomatic mission in Geneva rejected the report and accused the UN of relying on unverified information.
In total, more than 43,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the war began, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry.
