The ‘la Caixa’ Foundation will allocate a subsidy of 999,127 euros to a biomedical project in which the University of Murcia (UMU) participates, which aims to advance the generation of human organs in host animals from stem cells, according to reports yesterday sources from the entity in a statement.
Specifically, the project is led by Xabier Aranguren, from the Center for Applied Medical Research (CIMA), in consortium with Francisco Alberto García, from the UMU, and Graziano Martello, from the Università degli Studi di Padova (Italy).
Researchers take blastocysts – groups of cells that form several days after fertilization of the egg – from animals genetically modified so that they are incapable of developing a specific organ, for example, the heart, and inject them with pluripotent stem cells from a normal donor. , not necessarily of the same species, to develop the desired organ.
The new organ retains the characteristics of the original stem cell donor and can therefore potentially be used in transplant therapy, according to the statement.
