UMCG Researchers Receive 2.2 Million Euros Grant from KWF Cancer Control for Fundamental Cancer Studies

Three UMCG researchers have received a contribution of a total of 2.2 million euros from KWF Cancer Control for three fundamental studies.

Woolthuis and Van den Boom are investigating how cancer drugs can do their job in a targeted manner and do not cause side effects in unaffected parts of the body. They develop a drug that is activated by radiation at a specific spot.

Van den Boom also studies how mutations in certain genes cause a poor prognosis for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). These mutations cause healthy blood cells to turn into leukemia cells. He wants to use this to discover new starting points for treatment. Woolthuis also conducts research into AML and focuses her research specifically on the underlying biology of this serious disease. This research focuses on another genetic change, which is found in a large proportion of AML patients.
