More than 2,000 of the 50,000 participants in the Lifelines health survey were found to have a high risk of cardiovascular disease. This has emerged from a study by the UMCG and UMC Utrecht.
The researchers are very happy with this result, because it shows that the research contributes to the health of the participants. “A large number of Lifelines participants with a high risk of cardiovascular disease were previously not prescribed any blood pressure or cholesterol-lowering medication, even though the guidelines should,” says physician and researcher Yldau van der Ende. “Screening through their Lifelines participation now reveals these risk factors.”
The researchers will now further investigate whether the number of people who actually develop cardiovascular disease is decreasing as a result of the early diagnosis. By detecting these at a very early stage, the participants can be treated earlier.
