UTRECHT – UMC Utrecht will conduct research into a new drug against corona. If it works properly, it could lead to faster recovery from the disease and prevent hospitalizations.
The drug is called ensovibep. It is a protein that can block SARS-CoV-2. Previous international research has shown that it works for all corona variants discovered so far. UMC Utrecht is now going to see whether it is safe and effective enough.
Hundreds of volunteers are being sought for this. They must be at least 18 years old and have tested positive for corona in the past week.
Physician microbiologist Marc Bonten, who is a member of the OMT, is leading the research on behalf of the UMC. “Fortunately, the number of infections is declining sharply. At the same time, we cannot say that corona is completely out of our lives.” So Bonten hopes that ensovibep will make the life of corona patients a lot more pleasant. “In addition to vaccines, then we also have a treatment for people in the early stage of infection.”
