UMBAL Burgas reports a record number of drowning cases in the summer – 2024-09-27 08:28:51

UMBAL Burgas

A record number of water accidents this past summer ended fatally, reports UMBAL Burgas. 48 deaths due to drowning shows the report of the Department of Forensic Medicine. This is ten people more than in the summer of 2023 and previous years. If the data is divided by the number of days in the active season – July and August – this means one human life lost per day. There are almost as many cases of patients who were saved after drowning and went through the Emergency Department.

The statistics report an almost equal number of incidents involving Bulgarians and foreigners. Unfortunately, both among the dead and among the rescued are small children, left unattended near hotel pools and on the beach.

UMBAL Burgas reports an extremely busy summer season. From June 1 to September 15, 2024, 14,880 patients, or an average of 150 people per day, passed through the largest hospital in Southeast Bulgaria. 700 of them are foreigners. 90% of patients are admitted as an emergency and are directed to UMBAL Burgas as the only place where 24-hour medical assistance can be provided and medical specialists from over 30 specialties are available at the same time. Only here work departments that are not available in any medical institution in the region – multi-profile emergency department, rheumatology, endocrinology, infectious disease department, nephrology department, internal medicine with a hematological profile, skin and venereal disease department.
