In your Homepod there is not just one speaker but several, it also has a lot of advanced technology that makes it detect if it is against a wall or the like. This means it can ‘bounce’ sound and create a bigger sound with more atmosphere, which is perfect when watching movies or TV series.
You can use both the Homepod Mini and the larger and more advanced Homepod. You get the absolute best results if you have two Homepods that are connected in stereo, but it works just fine if you only have one Homepod. If you are going to create a stereo pair, there must be two of the same kind, otherwise it is not possible to make a stereo pair. For example, if you bought the first Homepod launched in 2017 and then supplemented with the one launched in 2023, it won’t work. You also cannot stereo pair a Homepod Mini with the larger one.
We have received several questions about whether it is possible to use the Homepod Mini as a satellite speaker, that is, using two Homepods as front speakers and then placing two Homepod minis behind the TV sofa can get real surround sound. It doesn’t work at the moment.
Also worth considering is that the Homepod Mini does not support Atmos sound.
This is what you need
- Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later. Make sure it’s updated with the latest software, TV OS 17)
- Homepod or Homepod mini speakers
- A TV that supports HDMI arc or eArc (if your TV only supports arc, you can’t benefit from Atmos)
Your TV must have hdmi arc or earc.
Do this

If it doesn’t sound anything
Sometimes you may need to enable hdmi arc or eArc in your Apple TV. Do this:
Go to the Apple TV home screen and select Settings, Video and sound, Sound out.
Make sure the room with the Homepod or Homepod mini speaker is selected under Default audio playback.
