Ultimate Guide to Caring for and Bleeding Your Radiator for Efficient Heating

If you feel that your radiator is heating poorly, you better start solving it as soon as possible, otherwise your expenses will skyrocket completely unnecessarily. The most common cause of problems is air in the radiator, but the problem can be anywhere. Read how to take care of your radiator in the best possible way.

Caring for the radiator

Only an adjusted and maintained radiator will heat well and cheaply. The radiator must be cleaned regularly, preferably with a vacuum cleaner and duster. The radiator should not be filled with things, then its performance is reduced. From time to time it does not hurt to check the thermostatic head, if any problem is suspected, remove it and press the valve cone several times. Also pay attention to the boiler. And last but not least, every heater needs to be vented from time to time. It is most effective to do this at the beginning of the heating season, but you can start it at any time.

How to bleed the radiator?

An aerated radiator does not work as well and efficiently. The air prevents the proper circulation of hot water, which causes the formation of cold spots. If venting sounds too technical, fear not, it’s actually very simple. We will guide you through it step by step. All you need is a radiator key and a towel.

  • Turn on the heat and let them heat for at least half an hour on the highest setting.
  • Place a towel under the radiator to catch any leaking water.
  • Use the wrench to turn the valve. Soon you will hear a hissing sound. As soon as water starts to flow from the valve, quickly screw it back on.
  • If you live in a multi-story building, start with the heating on the lowest floor and work your way up.

    When to call a plumber?

If you have wet spots behind your heater, don’t hesitate to get a plumber. It may be a problematic joint or seal, and this should be tightened or repaired by an expert.
