Ulrich Deppendorf criticizes TV coverage from Washington: “Black day for ARD and ZDF” – politics

The ARD showed the film “Forever Summer 90” from 8:15 pm and at that time was planning the film “Die Liebe des Hans Albers” immediately afterwards at 9.45 pm. On Thursday, Deppendorf replied to our newspaper’s request: “That was an event of the century yesterday in Washington. And it was a black day for the main programs of ARD and ZDF. ”

Thousands of people responded to Deppendorf’s tweet on social media. Most of them shared his criticism. Many former colleagues had also contacted him and spoke of a “failure” of the ARD. At the request of WESTFALEN-BLATTES, ARD rejected the criticism and pointed out that a “breaking news” window had been displayed on the events “from 9:14 p.m.” – with reference to the “tagesschau.de” website. In addition, the broadcasters Tagesschau 24 and Phoenix “reported the whole evening”, reports ARD spokesman Burchard Röver. At 9.45 p.m. there was a ten-minute “Daily Themes Extra”.

“That is not enough in any way. That’s the standard excuse, ”says Deppendorf. He also complains that presenter Claus Kleber referred to the coverage of the US news broadcaster CNN on the ZDF “heute journal”. “This is the capitulation of the main public service programs to CNN.”

After a “Tagesthemen-Extra” at 9.45pm, the ARD initially stuck to the planned program schedule and broadcast the Albers docudrama – but ended up breaking this film early at 11pm for a longer “Tagesthemen” broadcast. “Because of the uncertain situation on site, live switching could only be offered from 11 p.m.”, explains Röver.

“The Hans Albers film should have been canceled earlier,” criticized Deppendorf. “On such a historic day and at such a historic event, it is the duty of public service programs.” After all, he also finds words of praise – but not for his former employer: “The specialty channel only got the honor of ARD and ZDF yesterday Phoenix saved. ”
