Uldis Strautmanis: crane, OCHA and app shackles or the long way to Tokyo

“Uldi, but take and record all these facts, because it’s already scary.” Three men in a boat “a worthy story,” said a colleague Kārlis Dambrāns, in the office hearing my ironic remark about another “fun” that appeared on our way to the Tokyo Olympics. We are now in Japan and we can finally start thinking about work matters, but in recent weeks we have spent a lot of hours and nerves on the things that Covid-19 has “shaken” us. And not only…

The road to the Tokyo Olympics for me and my colleague Karl Dambran began two and a half years ago. For Karl they are the first, for me – the third. However, for both of us, they are the first in these funny times. We already had flight tickets for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, when the “bad boy” Covid-19 came from the east. It was clear that the plague would lead to the postponement of the Olympic Games for the first time, but now the world athletes’ competition will take place without the emotions that athletes will give to fans. Transforming what the classics say, empty grandstands are and remain empty grandstands.

In the spring, we got new air tickets without problems and were able to start thinking about the Olympics. But I had to wait… When the airline started to change the departure dates by the hour in a few days in May, it didn’t bother me much, but when the days changed, it annoyed me. As a result, our departure for Tokyo started a day earlier, but the trip will end a day later than originally planned. If only I knew that the airline change is a small child’s whim compared to the next fun.

In order for readers to briefly understand the daily lives of journalists, I will list what apps and sites we need to use on a daily basis (plus / minus). The mobile phone has an authentication code application (such a local SMART ID), a local “Stop Covid-19” or COCOA (which is not compatible with the Latvian application – it had to be uninstalled), “MySOS” (requested to be installed at the airport; I don’t know who needs it), media transport application to get to the objects and application queen OCHA. An application where you have to fill in your health data every day. An application that has already become a severe toothache for some.

At the same time, the computer has various sites that are necessary and sometimes useful for everyday work – the computer can use the already mentioned transport application, the infection control site ICON (which is related to the already mentioned OCHA), the competition and competitor information page for journalists (“MyInfo”) ), a site of various tutorials (“Extranet”), including the arrival and departure system from Japan, then still daily your work plan registration site.
