The UKSH is running out of blood. The University Hospital has therefore launched an urgent appeal for blood donations. The UKSH also offers blood donors the option of a corona vaccination.
Blood donations are on the decline, vacation time has only just begun
The University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) urges people to donate blood again. “Our stocks are at the lower limit and the vacation time, which generally means a decline in donations, has only just begun,” says Prof. Dr. Holger Hennig, Deputy Director of the Institute for Transfusion Medicine on the Kiel and Lübeck campuses. If the situation worsens further, operations that can be planned and for which blood reserves are held will have to be postponed. “Donating blood saves lives. We are very grateful for any support, ”says Prof. Hennig. The UKSH therefore offers all blood donors the opportunity to take advantage of a corona vaccination in the clinic.
Blood is needed for life-saving operations
At the UKSH, a total of around 1,000 blood donations are required per week at the Kiel and Lübeck locations. Patients suffering from cancer and who no longer produce enough of their own blood cells as a result of chemotherapy rely on the blood reserves (packed red blood cells). The blood products are also used in life-saving operations, transplants and emergency patients with severe bleeding. There is a serious shortage of blood reserves in many regions of Germany.
Appointments for donating blood can be booked online
Appointments for the donation at one of the three blood donation centers of the UKSH can be made via www.terminland.de/uksh can be booked quickly and easily. The opening times of the centers and further information can be found at www.uksh.de/blutspende.
