UK’s first waste-to-energy carbon capture pilot: An important step towards net zero emissions

Enfinium, the UK’s leading waste-to-energy operator, has launched the country’s first carbon capture pilot at its Ferrybridge site in West Yorkshire. The trial marks a key moment for the waste industry and Enfinium’s aim to integrate carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology across six of its UK sites to support the country’s net zero emissions targets.
The pilot project uses technology from Hitachi Zosen Inova (HZI) to capture one ton of carbon dioxide per day. Enfinium CEO Mike Maudsley emphasized the importance of this development:

The 12-month trial collected key data on CO2 capture rates and solvent performance, laying the foundation for large-scale deployment of CCS. Enfinium’s net zero transition plan aims to remove up to 12,000 tonnes of CO2 per year by the early 2020s and is supported by a £200m investment in carbon capture technology.
HZI CEO Bruno-Frédéric Baudouin expressed his appreciation for this cooperation:

The pilot project is also in line with the UK government’s Net Zero 2050 strategy, which has been urged by the Committee on Climate Change to accelerate carbon removal. The waste-to-energy industry can contribute up to 80,000 tons of carbon removal per year.
West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin praised the move:

Enfinium has also launched a public consultation to further advance CCS deployment at its Ferrybridge facility, which has been designated a project of national significance. This consultation will run from 16 to 20 March 2024.
