Ukrainians said how they feel about Victory Day

In Ukraine, less than half of the citizens surveyed are convinced that both dates must be marked at the state level – and Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation May 8, and Victory Day over Nazism 9th May.

Sociologists took an interest in Ukrainians’ opinion Democratic Initiatives Foundation named after Ilko Kucheriv. The results of a survey conducted at the end of April showed, what 41% of respondents think so.

In the same time 31% said that Ukraine should celebrate only May 9… About 9%on the contrary, they support the idea of ​​celebrating only Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation, yet 10% indifferent this is.

It is noted that the celebration of only May 8 is more supported in the western region (22%). Whereas in the east and south there are more of those who believe that it is worth celebrating only on May 9 (42 and 48%, respectively).

The idea of ​​celebrating both dates prevails among all age groups., except for the older 60 years, as well as among the electorate of all parties, except for HLE… This idea is also more popular among supporters of Ukraine’s accession to the EU, but among opponents of European integration, the majority consider it appropriate to celebrate only on May 9, “the sociologists explained.

The survey also showed that 25% Ukrainians consider May 9 primarily as a celebration victories of the anti-Hitler coalition in World War II. BUT 37% call this day celebrating the victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. but 25% do not share any of these formulations.

“The Soviet interpretation is still widespread in the central, southern and eastern regions. It is interesting that almost half of the inhabitants of the south and east (41 and 46%, respectively) did not choose any of these options,” added sociologists.

Note: the all-Ukrainian survey was conducted in all regions of Ukraine with the exception of Crimea and the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. 2021 respondents aged 18 and over took part in it. The theoretical sampling error is 2.3%.

In the same poll, almost the same number of Ukrainians appreciated the historical figure of Stepan Bandera both positive and negative for our state.
