Ukrainians Name United States, Poland, and UK as Top Supporters Against Russian Aggression: Survey

Ukrainians, by a noticeable margin, most often name the United States, Poland and the United Kingdom as the countries that most help Ukraine to counter Russian aggression, the survey results show.

During the survey, Ukrainians were asked to name three countries or international organizations that, in their opinion, provided the greatest support to Ukraine in the face of Russian military aggression, without answer options.

The vast majority – 69% – remembered the United States, followed by Poland (51%) and the UK (44%). It is interesting that these countries topped the rankings in previous surveys, but compared to the survey in February 2023, mentions of Poland dropped significantly (from 71%).

Germany was also mentioned a significant number of times (22%), and its mention has increased significantly since April 2022, when only 1% of respondents named the country as a significant donor of aid to Ukraine.

More than two percent of Ukrainians who took part in the survey also mentioned the EU (7%), Lithuania and France (5% each), NATO (3%), Canada, the Czech Republic, the Baltic countries in general and Estonia separately (2% each). More than 1% were cited by the UN, Latvia, the Netherlands, Italy, Turkey, Romania, Denmark and the UN Children’s Fund.

Only 1% of respondents could not name a single country or organization that provided the greatest support to Ukraine in the context of Russian military aggression. Let us add that the distribution of respondents across different age groups and regions is approximately the same.

The survey took place on September 9-12, 2023 through telephone interviews using a computer and covered 2,000 residents of Ukraine aged 18 years and over in all regions except temporarily occupied ones. The error of representativeness of the study with a confidence probability of 0.95 does not exceed 2.2 percentage points in both directions.

Let us note that before the start of the big war, six leaders could be distinguished among the countries that the Ukrainians called “friendly”. Four of them had similar indicators: the United States of America (28%), Poland (26%), Germany (23%), Belarus (21%). They were followed by Lithuania and Georgia (14% each).
