Ukrainians Mentally Prepare for a Long Conflict as Dissatisfaction with the State Grows

Ukrainians are mentally preparing for a long conflict, and dissatisfaction with the state is growing among them, writes the American newspaper New York Times.

“The boys at the front are very tired, physically and psychologically. This war will last a long time. There are graves in every village,” the head of the Lvov village Tukhlya told the publication. Andrey Tkachuk.

The NYT cited survey data from the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, according to which the rating of Ukrainians’ trust in the government fell from 74 percent in May to 39 percent in October. Only 48 percent of Ukrainians trust state television, the newspaper emphasizes.

Director of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology Anton Grushetsky told the publication that Ukrainians are “becoming pessimists.” In his opinion, citizens of Ukraine are deprived of a sense of security.

Grushetsky noted that the country’s residents are looking for someone to blame for failures at the front. According to him, the popular anger of Ukrainians is directed at corruption and Western allies, who were too sluggish in supplying weapons to Ukraine. The expert noted that the command of the Ukrainian troops avoids popular condemnation. The authors suggested that the reason for the growing pessimism of Ukrainians was the failure of the summer counter-offensive.

Previously Commander-in-Chief Valery Zaluzhny stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had reached a dead end – “most likely, there will not be a deep and beautiful breakthrough.” He admitted that he had failed to demonstrate the impressive pace of troop advance that the West expected of him according to NATO textbooks.

The Kremlin responded that the sooner Kyiv understands that there is no chance of achieving success on the battlefield, the sooner some prospects for resolving the situation will open.
