Ukrainians being overcharged at supermarkets: How to avoid falling victim to “frauds”

Ukrainians are forced to overpay for goods in supermarkets

Supermarkets and stores often carry out small “frauds” with the cost of goods in order to get more money from customers. For example, they specifically set prices there so as not to give all the change to clients.

The “insidiousness” of the scheme is that it is said in material OBOZ.UA that the buyer himself may not notice anything – after all, in each of these cases we are talking about a difference in the cost of the goods of several kopecks. However, for a retail establishment with a large flow of customers, the amount received in this way can be quite significant.

The scheme works on the principle of rounding. According to him:

  • an amount less than 5 kopecks must be “forgiven” to the buyer;
  • more than 5 kopecks has the right to keep the store.

“Often stores specifically set prices so that all roundings are not in favor of the buyer. For example, at a price of 9.96 UAH, 9.97 UAH, 9.98 UAH or 9.99 UAH, you still have to pay the store 10 UAH.” , analysts explain.

However, you can avoid becoming a victim of supermarket tricks. To do this, you just need to pay with a card.

“If you don’t want to overpay, use a bank card to pay. Then the rounding rules do not apply,” the material says.

In turn, experts “Consumer Rights Protection”, they warn: security guards in supermarkets and stores are often hired by other companies, and therefore do not represent these establishments. Accordingly, they do not have the right to force buyers to pay for damaged goods. If they do do this, they are grossly violating the law, which is a reason to call the police.

It is emphasized: in such a situation, the buyer should actively try to prove his innocence. In particular, require viewing video from surveillance cameras.

However, this may not have the desired effect. In this case, experts advise calling the police.

As OBOZ.UA reported, at the same time, supermarkets and shops must exchange and accept back non-food products, even if they were sold at a promotion. If a retail outlet makes a note like “promotional goods cannot be returned or exchanged” or something similar, then it is acting contrary to current legislation.
