ZAZ (or Zaporizhia Automobile Plant) is a car manufacturer operating in today’s Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia. During the Soviet era, it was most famous for models adapted to the disabled, which was called according to the place of production záporožci. In recent years, however, it has discontinued the production of passenger cars when it has focused on the production of buses or trucks.
Now, however, ZAZ is returning to the production of passenger cars, thanks to the Renault group, which has announced that the carmaker in Zaporozhye will produce its cars for the local Ukrainian market. The aim is to revive the Ukrainian car market, which, after the annexation of Crimea by Russia and the outbreak of war in the east of the country with pro-Russian separatists, found itself in a serious crisis for many years.

„We are proud to be implementing this project, which will create new jobs and contribute to the development of the domestic automotive industry. Localized assembly allows us to stay close to our customers and adapt the offer and services to the needs of the market, “ says Chairman of the Board of Directors of ZAZ Nikolai Evdokimenko about this project.
Renault has a key role in the Ukrainian car market. According to the analytical company Autostat, in the first half of this year it was the most sought-after brand, with 6,331 registrations, which was 5.1% more than a year ago. The second, by the way, is followed by Toyota, the third is Kia.
According to behind-the-scenes reports, the French carmaker will produce several models in Zaporozhye. However, it will not be primarily Renault cars, but Lada models, which are also part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. Specifically, ZAZ is to produce the Lada Vesta, Lada Xray and Lada Largus models, which are also to be complemented by Renault Arkana. This is a four-door SUV so far offered, for example, in Russia, which will be a novelty in the offer in Ukraine.
The Renault Group is not yet talking about specific production plans, except that the factory in Zaporozhye is undergoing extensive modernization due to this project. This is due to the fact that Ukrainian laws do not currently allow the import of finished cars from Russia. Even due to the annexation of Crimea, Ukraine resorted to sanctions against its neighbor. However, the production of cars from Russian parts directly in Ukraine should comply with local restrictions.

The carmaker in Zaporizhia began producing ZAZ cars in the early 1960s. Her first passenger car was the ZAZ 965, a city car with a unique four-cylinder fork. Even before that, however, the factory in Zaporizhia produced agricultural machinery, such as Komunnar harvesters. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the ZAZ brand was retained, the carmaker continued to produce the ZAZ 1102 model, better known in our country as Tavria.
In addition, it is expanding its portfolio with licensed Daewoo cars, which were replaced by Chevrolet cars after its crash (ZAZ Vida was a Chevrolet Aveo). The company gradually cooperated with other car manufacturers, especially the Chinese Chery. She focused primarily on cheap models. In 2018, however, the production of passenger cars was stopped and ZAZ focused on the production of buses and trucks. Now, however, he is finally returning to passenger cars.
