Ukrainian view from Liepāja: New missiles did not scare the West

On the other hand, escalation began on all fronts, from military to diplomatic.

And then Russia launched a new missile against Ukraine – they say

see what we look like hard guys, don’t open your mouth too wide!

Russia has long been wary of long-range missile strikes such as ATACMS or Storm Shadow. All the while telling that if this happens, “our revenge will be very terrible.”

And then it happened.

Ukraine received permission to use these missiles two weeks ago.

And just three days later, 12 such missiles hit the underground command center in the Kursk region, where the Russian officers in charge of the Kursk group were located.

Russia hastened to think: how to respond, what should be the revenge?

The “Daggers” and “Zirkons” are not so famous, and even they are lost from time to time. Missiles with warheads no longer surprise anyone.

A normal strike also doesn’t have much effect, as 70-80% of drones miss their targets. A nuclear strike also seemed unlikely due to the unpredictable nature of the world’s public opinion.

However, one trump was found.

Putin called him “Oreshnik”. The so-called new intermediate ballistic missile.

There is no guarantee that the next attack with such missiles will not target civilians.

But the strike on Dnipro, or, more precisely, on Ukraine’s largest defense company Yuzhmash, had a confirmation nature, its main purpose was to scare NATO.

In this way, Russia is trying to increase the level of tension and prevent Ukraine’s allies from allowing strikes on Russian territory using Western long-range missiles.

In Russia, after the test of the supposedly new missile, real hysteria broke out both on state channels and among so-called war correspondents: “The West and Ukraine are shaking, the president we still have a hard nut to crack, and soon we will grind you. powder!”

It is difficult to say whether there are many such missiles in Russia.

But starting mass production will not be difficult. And in their warehouses there are still many missiles written with conditions that should have been destroyed a long time ago, but now they can be disposed of in a different way, sending death to Ukraine .

Therefore, many new threats arise for both Ukraine and NATO. How to eliminate these risks quickly? It does not make sense to talk only about anti-missile systems, it is not likely that they (new systems capable of firing this type of missile) will be transferred to Ukraine in the near future.

But attacks on factories deep in Russia where these missiles and individual parts are made, as well as storage areas for these missiles, could be an important part of this countermeasure. .

And NATO understands this very well. It seems that the Atlantic Alliance is not afraid of Putin’s new horror stories.

On the other hand, they started talking about the possibility of supplying Ukraine with missiles capable of hitting targets at a distance of 1,000 to 5,500 kilometers…
