A small town in eastern Ukraine, close to the front line with pro-Russian separatists, will now be called New York …
Founded in the 18th century
On Twitter, the US Embassy in Ukraine wrote : “congratulations to the folks in New York, Donetsk region”, before adding: “One more reason to celebrate our close bond. We are huge fans of your new / old name!”. As reported 20 Minutes, more than 300 deputies voted for “make its name historic” to this town of 12,000 inhabitants, about thirty kilometers from Donetsk.
It is one of the strongholds of the pro-Russian separatists who therefore agree to a measure proposed by several of its premises. This locality was founded in the 18th century, and had adopted the name of New York a century later for a reason still not determined.
