Ukrainian Teenage Boys Deported to Russia for Military Programs: Violation of International Law

There are cases where teenage Ukrainian boys have been deported to Russia to participate in military programs. This was stated at a conference in Riga under the title “Russia’s war against children”, the main prosecutor’s office of Ukraine, quoted by Ukrinform, writes BTA.

“Within the framework of the case opened by us, we are verifying information about 19,546 children who were deported to Russia under the guise of “humanitarian” activities. These children are not simply relocated, but deprived of their Ukrainian self-consciousness: they are given Russian citizenship, they are placed with Russian families, forcibly re-educated in Russian and forbidden to speak Ukrainian. Teenage boys are often forced to participate in paramilitary programs,” Ukraine’s chief prosecutor Andriy Kostin told the forum.

He noted that such actions are prohibited by international humanitarian law.

Kostin added that the Independent International Commission to Investigate Violations in Ukraine, created under the auspices of the United Nations, concluded that “in one of the cases examined by the Commission, the transfer of children did not meet the requirements of international humanitarian law.”

“These transfers were neither justified for security nor medical reasons,” the prosecutor said.

He called for using every opportunity to oppose these flagrant violations of international law and for the children to be returned home, adds Ukrinform.
