(CNN) The commander who led the effort to retake oil and gas drilling facilities off the coast of Crimea in southern Ukraine has given details of the operation, revealing that the fighters carried out the operation in rubber boats.
The excavation facility, known as Boiko Tower, has been under Russian control since the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
On the 11th, the Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine released footage of the recapture operation.
The commander of the Special Forces of the Ministry of Defense’s Intelligence Directorate recently gave an interview to a Ukrainian reporter from the television station “1+1” and reflected on the recapture operation.
“Preparations for the special operation had been going on for about a month and a half. We were conscious of the possibility that it would be a one-way operation, because only fools and the dead are not afraid. We used rubber boats because they were more maneuverable. This is because it is difficult to see from air support means due to its high altitude.” (Commander)
During the operation, Ukrainian intelligence officers reportedly encountered Russian combat aircraft and shot them down using portable air defense systems.
“As we were trying to bring the boat to shore, aircraft started attacking our fighters. One of the shells could have sunk it,” the commander said. The tail of the boat was hit and smoke rose.
Special forces aboard the excavation facility reportedly found Russian ammunition and important equipment used for reconnaissance in the western Black Sea.
The commander pointed out that the recapture of Boyko Tower was a severe blow to Russia. “We have significantly restricted Russia’s actions in the Black Sea, in the waters around Zmyny (Snake Island). We have pushed Russian forces back to the coast of Crimea,” he said.
