Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleschuk confirmed in a telegram on Saturday that Ukrainian soldiers shot down a Russian Kinzhal supersonic missile over Kyiv on Thursday. For this, they used the Patriot anti-missile system, which was provided to Ukraine by the Western allies. This is the first case when the Ukrainians managed to destroy this Russian missile, Ukrainian media write.

“Greetings to the Ukrainian nation on the occasion of a historic event! Yes, we shot down the Kinžal missile, which is ‘unmatched!’ It happened during the night attack on May 4 in the sky over the Kyiv region,” Oleschuk wrote. He added that the missile was fired by a MiG-31K fighter from Russian territory.
Even on Friday, the Ukrainian Air Force denied the information about the downing of Kinzhal. On Saturday, Oleschuk said that “everything has its time” and that the military cannot publish information that could be used by the enemy.
The Kinzhal missiles are part of a series of hypersonic weapons that Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled in 2018, when he also said they could hit almost anywhere in the world and evade the United States’ anti-missile shield.
Already Russia has used daggers in Ukraine several times, according to earlier information from the Unian agency, for example during last August’s strike on military facilities in the Vinnytsia region.
The command of the Ukrainian Air Force admitted in the past that the available means of Ukrainian air defense did not allow to effectively detect and destroy these missiles.
Hypersonic weapons travel at least five times faster than sound and are difficult to track and intercept due to their speed and maneuverability. According to the Russian army, Kinžal has a range of 2,000 kilometers.
