UN: Almost 10,000 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since the start of the war

Nearly 10,000 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since the start of the war, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said on Tuesday.

The office’s new report confirms that since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, 9,444 civilians have been killed and 16,940 injured in Ukraine. Among those killed are 500 children.

The true number of victims is believed to be much higher. The OHCHR noted that the census is incomplete due to missing data from many regions.

The lack of data especially applies to such cities as Mariupol, Lisichansk and Severodonetsk, which were occupied by the Russian army after long and heavy battles, which makes it difficult to obtain data.

Ukraine also believes that the number of Ukrainians killed may be several thousand or tens of thousands higher than the officially registered number.

According to UN data, 7,339 civilians have died in regions of Ukraine that have been shelled by Russia and protected by the Ukrainian army. 2105 civilians were killed in the occupied regions of Russia.

Donetsk and Luhansk regions on both sides of the front have significantly more casualties than Kyiv, central Ukraine and the west of the country.

The UN report shows that most civilians were killed in the first months of the war. In the spring and summer of 2023, 170 to 180 civilians died every month.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 77 men from Russia have applied for asylum in Latvia, the LETA agency learned from the Directorate of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.

Of these, international protection status was granted to 14 persons.

However, the administration does not collect statistics on the reasons for requesting asylum.

LETA already wrote that some Russian citizens have asked for asylum in Latvia because they do not want to be mobilized and involved in hostilities in Ukraine.
