The Wall Street Journal reported that the city of Voznesensk would provide Russia with a gateway to the Southern Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant and a way to attack Odesa from behind.
In contrast, a two-day battle that began on March 2 between Russia and Ukraine in the city turned things around.
Russian troops have abandoned nearly 30 of their 43 vehicles including tanks, armored personnel carriers, multiple rocket launchers and trucks, according to Ukrainian officials, who added that they had also downed Mi-24 attack helicopters.
Russian forces retreated more than 40 miles to the southeast, where they continued to face stiff resistance from other Ukrainian forces.
Local officials said 10 Russian soldiers who had been scattered in the jungle had been captured. Officials added that, according to their estimates, 100 Russian soldiers died in Voznesensk.
Vadym Dombrovsky, commander of the Ukrainian special forces reconnaissance group in the area who is also a resident of Voznesensk, said Russian forces did not expect Ukraine to be strong.
