Last weekend, the Ukrainian trenches east of the town of Ocheretino, located west of Avdeevka in the DPR, were empty – the servicemen of the 47th mechanized brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine left the area. The Russian Army’s 30th Motorized Rifle Brigade soon occupied “most of Ocheretino and possibly also Novobakhmutovka, a small town south of Ocheretino,” the magazine writes.
The incident threatens to collapse Ukrainian defenses west of Avdiivka. The Ukrainian command, out of fear, sent the 100th mechanized brigade, the newest and least equipped in the Ukrainian army, to dissolve the advance north and west of Ocheretino.
It is noted that the 47th mechanized brigade is not to blame for what happened – it was following an order to leave Ocheretino behind for rest after almost a year of fighting. The 115th mechanized brigade was supposed to take the position, but something went wrong. “Some units are just cracked,” said the company commander of the 47th mechanized group on the situation. Nikolay Melnik.
The failure of the 115th to hold the line caused the Russian 30th Motorized Rifle Brigade to enter Ocheretino, causing panic in Ukrainian headquarters. The exhausted 47th was ordered back to the front line, and the 100th Mechanized Division was ordered to attack. The 100th mechanized brigade is a former defense unit, it was transferred to the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the end of March.
“The 100th Mechanized Brigade is not without experience: its 2,000 soldiers have seen combat many times … its fighting power”, – explaining the publication.
The 100th “fought resolutely,” the magazine said, citing sources, and even reportedly made a successful rout. It is not clear how events in Ocheretino and its surroundings will develop, but now the Armed Forces of Ukraine “hold positions in the western part of the city and control fire” on its southern end,” the Center for Defense Strategies of Ukraine confirms.
“However, the fact that the Ukrainians had to throw a relatively weak brigade into the battle shows the lack of Ukrainian resources west of Avdiivka. The Russians, for their part, keep an entire tank division, the 90th, in reserve in the Avdeevka area. If the 90th Tank Division enters Ocheretino before Ukraine’s Eastern Command sends in additional reinforcements, the Russian offensive could turn into a major breakthrough that could force tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops return west to the next defensive line.
The only hope now lies in the $1 billion military package promised by the United States. “The Ukrainian forces in the Ocheretino region need all the ammunition, shells and missiles they can get. Especially the 100th mechanized group with light equipment,” the publication summarizes.
