Ukrainian refugees who work in the Netherlands will contribute more to their living expenses. Every working Ukrainian must pay 105 euros per month for gas, water and electricity. Nearly 243 euros are charged monthly for food at the refugee shelter.

The step to allow working Ukrainian refugees to contribute more is contained in a letter to Parliament from outgoing State Secretary Eric van der Burg (Asylum).

They don’t have to pay rent. The State Secretary would have wanted working refugees to help pay for shelter, but then they would also build up rental rights.

In the State Secretary’s plan, municipalities are required to withdraw living allowances of several hundred euros per month for working Ukrainians. That was already possible, but not yet necessary.

Ukrainian refugees who work are not required to take out health insurance. According to Van der Burg, this is not feasible.

The House of Representatives will again debate the policy for Ukrainian refugees on Thursday. More than half of them are employed, it turned out earlier this year. This will allow them to pay part of their living expenses themselves, is the idea of the State Secretary and a majority of the House of Representatives.

By mid-February, more than 107,000 Ukrainians were registered in the Netherlands. Municipalities accommodate around 90,000 people from this group in sports halls, for example.
