The head of the board of UZ, Yevgeny Lyashchenko, noted that the railway workers studied world experience, because women’s compartments or carriages exist in some Asian countries and have been tested in Europe.
“We believe in a set of measures where panic buttons and alarms in the compartment, video surveillance, increased patrols and inevitable punishment for any proven manifestation of harassment will play a key role in eradicating this phenomenon,” he said.
Therefore, it was decided to test the women’s coupe model for several months and, together with society and specialists, decide on scaling. So, it will depend on actual demand and feedback.
At the first stage, the service for buying tickets for women’s compartments can only be purchased through the UZ mobile application.
The service already existed
In 2010, Ukrzaliznytsia already introduced such a service, but it was not in demand, since it was available only at the box office. Women’s compartments were introduced on an experimental basis on several selected long-distance routes, the passengers of which spent a lot of time on the road.
At the same time, it is noted that all new and modernized UZ cars – about 15% – are necessarily equipped with video surveillance cameras and conductor call buttons.
What are women’s coupes for?
The topic of women’s coupes began to be actively discussed on social networks after the publication of one woman on Twitter, in which she talked about a trip with three men, but she was worried about her safety and therefore moved to another coupe. Then she called on UZ to make separate compartments for women.
After that, a petition appeared on the website of the Cabinet of Ministers to introduce separate carriages for women and men on trains.
