Ukrainian leaders have made no secret of their desire to meet with Chinese officials in Switzerland this week, but President Volodymyr Zelensky went home without the desired meeting in a blow to Kiev, the US editorial office of Politico.
The Chinese delegation in Switzerland had ample opportunities to sit down against their Ukrainian counterparts, whether in Bern or at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Any meeting would satisfy a long-held hope in Kiev for frank, personal discussions with senior officials from Beijing. Just ahead of the multinational peace summit in the Swiss Alps, Ukraine’s president’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said it was imperative that China join the peace talks and hinted that Zelensky would have an opportunity to speak with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.
According to the information of the publication, the Chinese side did not meet with Zelensky “intentionally, not because of scheduling problems”.
At the same time, a Ukrainian source in a comment to the newspaper said that Kiev did not want a meeting from Beijing in Davos.
Earlier, the Chinese Foreign Ministry did not comment on the information about the possibility of a meeting between Li Qiang and Zelensky.
